Join Washington Autism Alliance & Advocacy for an in-depth explanation on how to use the building blocks of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to develop appropriate services for your child or student.

9:00 – 9:20 – Check in; Meet & Greet

9:20 – 11:30 Panel Presentation
● ABCs of IEPs: What does each section of an IEP mean? What should you be looking for in each of those sections? – Katie Hurt

● Evaluation Process: How does it get captured in an IEP (what drives services) – Nicholle Mineiro

● The ADA and IEPs: The IDEA is not the only law that provides protections for students. How can the ADA be used to provide in advocating for students with disabilities? – Debbie Dorfman

Break: 10:20-10:30am

● Restraint and Isolation: What is the law regarding restraint and isolation? When is it considered seclusion and restraint? What are my child’s rights? – Kathy George

● Professional Communications: What should be written in letters/emails to the IEP team? What does it mean to “document” an IEP meeting when it can’t be recorded? How do I write an effective email when I’m really angry? – Katrina Durkin

● What are the steps I can take to resolve disputes with the IEP? What are the different processes to resolve disputes with the school? When is each strategy most effective? – Nicholle Mineiro

11:30-12:30 – Light lunch served

12:30 – 3:30 Breakout Sessions

Guests rotate every 40 minutes with their group, 5-minute break between each session. These sessions are an opportunity to participate in group discussions facilitated by different presenters.
(NOTE: the attorney presenters are not able to provide legal advice during this time and they are available to provide education and facilitate discussion.)
