Artforms of India: Cheriyal Scroll Painting Workshop on Silk

Purnakala School of Indian Art presents Art for All workshops- a monthly hand-on workshop featuring a traditional visual artform of India.
Come celebrate women’s day with story and art at March’s workshop on Cheriyal Scroll Painting on silk— bring your favorite women along and paint together!

If you’ve ever wanted to paint on fabrics here is your chance to learn the medium! In this workshop, we will explore the vibrant storytelling tradition of Cheriyal art and learn specific tips and techniques for painting on silk. These skills will enable you to create any artwork of your choice in this unique medium.

Take home a Cheriyal Painting on pure silk that can be framed or stitched.

In this workshop we will learn about:
– The history and cultural ethos of Cheriyal Scroll Paintings, including it’s deep connection to local folklore and storytelling
– ⁠Foundational pattern design and compositional structure for creating a Cheriyal image
– Crafting specific color themes and brushwork details to achieve the nostalgic feel of a Cheriyal Painting
– ⁠Preparation of a traditional patam (cloth surface) and how to achieve it using modern, accessible materials. Learn to prepare and paint on a Silk cloth panel.
